How to Play (Dangerous Games, #1) Fun read for gaming fansI just laughing at all the sights and people that I have seen at Gen con in this book. Plus the tie in to "The Gamers: Hand of Fate" made it even better ( and not just because my son and I had great seats for "Games Live" at Gen con 2012 resulting in getting our half second of fame as extras in the crowd). • A Christmas Memory
A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote 2024-03-29T14:42:20+00:00

A Christmas Memory Re-read and added a star. Truman Capote’s childhood memory of his adored cousin, the “sixty-something” yet childlike best friend of his youth, is brimming with richly evoked country seasonal preparations to immerse you in the holiday spirit. “Scented acres of holiday trees, prickly-leafed holly. Red berries shiny as Chinese bells: black crows swoop upon them screaming. Having stuffed our burlap sacks with enough greenery and crimson to garland a dozen windows, we set about choosing a tree. ‘It should be,’ muses my friend, ‘twice as tall as a boy. So a boy can’t steal the star A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote

Turing's Cathedral: The Origins of the Digital Universe by George Dyson 2024-03-29T14:42:20+00:00

Turing's Cathedral: The Origins of the Digital Universe Summary: Great book on the genesis of the computer with a cast of characters that any math or physics nerd will find to be all-star. Even Einstein shows up.I really enjoyed hearing the actual story of how the computer came to be before and after the world wars that drove it in a particular direction and toward a particular set of use cases. You also the early days of IBM and RCA.A few other reflections after letting it digest. The book is incredibly well-researched and Dyson really seems uniquely able to tell it. Im giving it 5 stars b/c I think it deserves a higher rating Turing's Cathedral: The Origins of the Digital Universe by George Dyson

Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar Where did my review go? I posted it last night and now its gone ... Hmm. When will I learn and start writing my reviews in Word and not directly on GR?Here we go again.I wouldnt have picked this to read had it not been for the raving reviews of a few GR friends, so many thanks to Esil, Glenn, Elyse and Cheri for the direct and indirect prompt.I chose to listen to the audiobook and it was just perfect, as it was narrated by Cheryl Strayed herself.I knew early on that this book was going to kill me as I wept while listening to the introduction read by Steve Almond Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar by Cheryl Strayed

A Good Kind of Trouble by Lisa Moore Ramée 2024-03-29T14:42:20+00:00

A Good Kind of Trouble I read this book on a quest to read all of the Lone Star Books this year. I almost gave it 3 stars, but then I put my 6th grader hat on. This isnt one of those edgy Black Lives Matter books that makes headlines for challenging the norm and bringing the harsh realities to light. This is a book for a middle grade reader about how difficult it is to navigate racism, especially at that age. How to navigate friendships when people start noticing the differences. How to navigate crushes and all the big feelings that go with that A Good Kind of Trouble by Lisa Moore Ramée
